Interpreting Services
Court Administration

The Court of Common Pleas of Lehigh County is committed to providing equal access to justice to all citizens, regardless of the language they speak. Trained and qualified court interpreters are utilized in all criminal, adult and juvenile probation, juvenile delinquency, juvenile dependency, custody, child support, protection from abuse, and adoption cases where litigants have limited English proficiency. The Court does not provide interpreting for civil cases.

Over the past year interpreters have served litigants in 15 languages in nearly 3000 court proceedings. While the vast majority require assistance in Spanish, we have also provided multiple services in Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Arabic, and Russian. Services are coordinated and provided by the Interpreting Services Unit, consisting of a Lead Interpreter, a Coordinator of Interpreting Services, and a roster of people experienced in court interpreting.

As soon as a case begins, litigants should inform the court office they are dealing with of their need for interpreting services. Requests for services are made with the Interpreting Services Unit by court personnel, not litigants.

All Lehigh County interpreters are registered with the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts - AOPC, and have met, or are in the process of meeting, strict certification requirements. For a complete list of registered interpreters or for information about the AOPC certification program go to http://www.pacourts.us/T/AOPC.
