Under the supervision of the Administrative Judge of Juvenile Delinquency, all of the judges in the Criminal/Juvenile Division are assigned to hear juvenile delinquency cases. Juvenile Court Hearing Officers are also assigned to her a significant number of juvenile delinquency cases.
Juvenile delinquency cases come before the Juvenile Court Hearing Officers and Judges as a result of the District Attorney's Office having filed a petition. Cases are referred to the Intake Unit within the Juvenile Probation Department. If the juvenile has been detained in a juvenile detention facility, a detention hearing must be held within 72 hours. At the detention hearing, the Juvenile Court Hearing Officer determines whether the juvenile can be released to his/her parents or detained until the adjudication hearing. If the juvenile is detained at the adjudication hearing, the case will normally be scheduled for a disposition hearing where it will be determined what type of disposition is appropriate. The Juvenile Probation Department is responsible for the juvenile until the juvenile is released from supervision.
